MY STORY
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” – Thomas Merton
Since I was a young girl, I was deeply drawn to colour, texture, light, and composition, and art was my greatest passion throughout high-school. However, upon finishing high-school, I was told that art can never be a serious profession and that I was to find a “real job”.
I went on to work in a pharmacy, where I met my husband and worked alongside him everyday for nearly thirty years, until he had a life-altering stroke in 2021 that changed everything. Faced once more with a crossroads, I chose differently this time, leaving my 9–5 job in the medical field to finally pursue my life-long dream of becoming an artist.
Now here we are, and how lucky am I that I get to do what I love every single day!
My art draws deeply from nature and my connection to it, mainly depicting scenes, flora and fauna that I have photographed myself. Having the privilege of living in the beautiful South Africa, I hope to bring these scenes to life for those who are unable to experience them in real time. I am drawn to the abandoned buildings, the lonesome windmills and the never-ending sky, because it can be lonely, isolating, and often-times discouraging following your dreams and pursuing your passions. However, it can also be very beautiful. The things that I get to see, the work that I create, the people that I meet and connect with along the way.
I believe that birds are so beautiful and vibrant because they are so free. They cannot be confined. I hope to be an inspiration to those who were told that they cannot achieve their dreams. To show them that it truly never is too late to do what you love and to forge your own future. And to prove the ones who told them otherwise wrong.
